In the field of critical discourse analysis "bad faith" is hardly a concept and yet stands as an intuitive dimension of speech conventions. It spans across rhetorics, ethics, semantics, reasoning and argumentation. This article and the overall volume which it introduces is interested in trying to develop formal criteria to distinguish bad faith from denial, lying, or manipulation. The aim is to provide linguistic evidence of its inner workings in relation to pragmatical and psychological factors.
